I'm Zooey and I'm a 26 year old trans woman who hails from the frozen tundra that is Canada. I came out to family and friends recently, and while I received almost universal acceptance, I still got some odd questions (just Google "trans FAQ" and you'll find the oh so common "so... that means you're really, really gay, right?").

The two things I hold most responsible for all of this are the media and education. Films, TV, hell, even the news almost unfailingly places trans* people somewhere along the joke-demon continuum. If we're not cross-dressing for kicks, then we're destroying the American family, or confusing the children. I believe that the education system doesn't do enough to normalize LGBT people, and to just teach kids that we're human, and there's nothing wrong with us.

There are a lot of issues facing trans people (the un/importance of passing, finding sympathetic medical practitioners, telling friends and family, having rights recognized by government) and I feel that the more information there is out there, the more easily people will be able to find the support they need.
